I wish

Hello this is Greg from http://www.onlinelanguageacademy.com/ and today I'm doing this video from Malibu Beach in Los Angeles, California.

Now, it’s a beautiful, beautiful place. We found a small, little beach which is in the middle of many many private beaches and the private beaches are usually for Hollywood actors and I thought it would be a good opportunity to give you a short lesson on the grammatical construction that we use with WISH.

So let's use it in some examples
I wish I was a Hollywood actor
I wish I had $20 million to buy a house on the Pacific Ocean
I wish I lived here

Did you notice the construction in each of these examples? We use I wish + Past Simple.
I wish I was
I wish I had
I wish I lived

This is a very simple construction that we use and if we're talking about regrets in the past – I can't imagine that people with a house with a view like this have many regrets – but if you have about the past, you can also use ‘I wish’ with the past perfect. Let me give you some examples.
I wish I had brought sun cream because I forgot it and as a consequence, we can't spend too much time on this beach today.
I wish we had decided to spend more time here because we're only here for two days.

So things that are in the past we can't change them because they're in the past. We use I wish I had…
I wish I had chosen...
I wish I had brought...
I wish we had decided...
