The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) 27DD class destroyers have been designed to operate a modified AEGIS weapon system along with electromagnetic artillery gun system and laser weapon systems. The laser weapon systems being developed by the Technical Research and Design Institute are intended to engage airborne threats more effectively than missile systems. The laser weapon is intended to engage cruise, anti-ship missiles and other high precision weapons. The electromagnetic gun is also being developed in Japan. The 27DD class destroyers will feature a combined gas turbine and electric power plant. The 27DD's AEGIS systems will undergo several modifications to improve data exchange and external target designation. The modified AEGIS will also incorporate a new surface search radar and a towed array sonar.
