According to local legend, Bukit Putus in Negeri Sembilan was once the battleground of mythical tiger kings and were-tigers. On December 20th 1875, that same narrow mountain pass would once again echo with the sounds of battle — but this time with rifles and bayonets, as the British Empire clashed with Malay states fighting to defend their sovereignty.
In this video, we explore the dramatic and little-known Battle of Bukit Putus, a decisive moment in the Sungei Ujong War that brought British imperial forces into direct confrontation with Malay resistance under Yam Tuan Antah. Following a desperate fight at Paroi, Malay forces withdrew into the formidable Bukit Putus Pass — an almost impregnable natural fortress of jungle, steep hills, and narrow defiles. What followed was a carefully planned British advance involving Gurkhas, British infantry, naval gunners, rockets, mountain guns, and a controversial Arab mercenary contingent.
This video traces:
The legend of how Bukit Putus got its name and its enduring symbolic power
The strategic importance of the mountain pass
The daring Gurkha assault on the stockades led by Captain George Nicholas Channer
The collapse of Malay resistance and the brutal war crimes that followed
The wider political consequences for the Minangkabau states of the Malay Peninsula
