Herbaceous climbers, to 3 m, with foetid smell, stem terete, whitish or yellowish-green hairs or glabrous. Leaves 4-11 x 3-10 cm, 3-5-nerved from base. Lobes up to 4 cm; petioles 1.5-6 cm long. Inflorescence 1(-2)-flowered; peduncle 2-6 cm long, tendril 5-15 cm long; bracts (1-) 2-4 cm long, deeply 2-4- pinnatifid. Flowers 2.5-5 cm in diameter, pink, lilac or purplish, sometimes white. Fruit a dry-berry, subglobose, 1.5-2.5 cm diameter, glabrous, yellowish to red. Seeds many, 5 x 2.5 mm.
