Wells Fargo stock has been beaten up over the past five years, engulfed in the lingering customer account scandal. This is a stock that is still owned by Warren Buffett at last check, but his holding has been steadily diminishing. Granted, Buffett dropping a stock has not always led to shareholder destruction. One doesn't have to look further than Buffett unloading Southwest airlines in 2020 to find an example of a stock being able to do well after Buffett unloaded his shares.
Wells Fargo has been doing much better on a year to date basis, relative to the big banks. Their year to date return is actually higher than Bank of America and JP Morgan Chase. I believe there are positive catalysts in place for Wells Fargo to keep that momentum going in the next few years.
The new CEO of WFC has previously been the CEO of BNY Mellon and Visa, two very strong companies with solid reputations. He has been doing his part to restore the confidence to WFC shareholders, by transforming the culture of the company. While this won't happen overnight, there are reasons to believe the culture is already improving.
