The statue shows the King with the letters founding the Charles University, which was founded in 1348 and is the oldest university in Central Europe. This statue was erected on the 500th anniversary in 1848. King Charles IV is a very famous figure in Czech history because he made Prague the capital of the Holy Roman Empire and built other buildings in Prague.
