Following the establishment of Bellevue Avenue in 1853, land subdivision, real estate speculation, and resort architecture dominated Newport’s development as a seaside retreat in the mid-nineteenth through the early twentieth centuries. Bellevue Avenue would become known as a 'laboratory of design', where America's leading architects would showcase houses intended to tempt and to taunt, to conceal and reveal.
