AI, Trust and the Fine Print We Don’t Read

AI is influencing both our personal and professional lives in unexpected ways.
On Ticker News with Mike Loder, I explored two stories that highlight this shift:
1. Online dating and AI.
Facebook Dating (not available in Australia) is rolling out tools that suggest matches outside a user’s usual preferences to encourage new connections.
The idea is to reduce swipe fatigue, but it raises serious privacy concerns. The app collects highly personal data, yet the terms are buried in lengthy conditions no one reads.
I argued that platforms must communicate these terms in plain language so people truly understand what they’re signing up for.
2. AI in the workforce.
Roles that rely on empathy, judgement and physical presence, like psychologists, emergency services and trades, are safe for now.
Repetitive roles such as transcription, scheduling and even parts of radiology are most at risk of automation.
The key is for workers to identify where AI can assist in their roles and use it to boost efficiency, rather than fear it will take over entirely.
Across both discussions, one theme stood out: trust.
Trust in platforms not to misuse sensitive data. Trust in AI systems to support rather than replace us. Trust that regulation can keep pace.
The reality is we’re still seeing vague guidelines, minimal oversight and over-reliance on self-regulation.
Without stronger safeguards, we risk repeating the same mistakes we’ve already seen with social media.
In your opinion, how do we balance innovation with protection before it’s too late?
