By creating a simulated threat and providing simulated sensors to detect that threat, the CBRN Response Simulator makes it possible to easily set up both small- and large-scale exercises in a simple, safe, and affordable manner.
The CBRN Response Simulator allows specialist personnel to be sent out to detect simulated threats using modelled hazmat sensors. These sensors mimic, as much as possible, the functionality of real CBRN sensors, but produce 'mock' simulated readings. A back-end CBRN dispersion modelling application is responsible for simulating a realistic CBRN plume as defined in a scenario. The dispersion model will tell sensors, operated by field units, what values to display based on their coordinates.
Field units operating the sensors need to interpret these readings and report results back up the chain of command using standard procedures. Incident commanders (if taking part in the exercise) will, subsequently, have to formulate a proper response. Not only does this allow trainees to familiarize themselves with CBRN response procedures, it also allows them to validate whether these procedures make sense.
An instructor has access to a GIS (graphical information system) interface on which all important information about the exercise is visualized. This includes the location of the simulated CBRN plume, the current and past positions of the trainees, actual readings of each sensor and more. If an instructor so desires, he may also pause the simulation to, for example, provide feedback to trainees. During the debriefing after the exercise has taken place, the recorded information can be reviewed and analysed in-depth under the guidance of the instructor.
