3 Common Errors with Foley Catheter Insertion

Remember, this is a skill requiring sterile technique! If you break sterile field, always restart. Infection prevention is PRIORITY!

#2 → Inflating Balloon Too Soon
Do not inflate the balloon before you see urine flow through the drainage tube! Doing this can cause injury to the urethra.

#3 → Incorrect Insertion Site
Most commonly in females, the insertion attempt can sometimes be in the wrong place – remember, everyone’s anatomy is different. You can leave the first Foley in place as a landmark and sterilely insert a second catheter into the urethra. (Then of course remove the first!)
