In this video, we will dive deep into the properties, chemical composition and applications of 440C stainless steel and we will compare this steel grade to 440B stainless steel.

440C (X105CrMo17) is a stainless steel with high carbon content and has good machinability, excellent polishing properties, low distortion, good hardness, and good wear resistance.

When correctly heat treated, it even has the capability to reach the highest strength, hardness and wear resistance among the corrosion and heat resistant stainless steels.

Its chemical composition makes this stainless steel one of the most sought out stainless knife steels. Its high carbon content of 0.95 - 1.20% gives it a unique hardness which is essential to maintain a good sharpness.

With a 16 - 18% of chromium content, AISI 440C is a martensitic chromium steel.

Otherwise, it can also be used for:

Ball bearings
Bushings
Valve parts
Cutlery
Blades
Nozzles
Pump parts
Medical -, surgical - and dental instruments

In comparison to 440B stainless steel, 440C has a slightly higher hardenability at the expense of its corrosion resistance.
