On February 1, 1967, Braniff International merged with Pan American Grace Airways, also known by the trade name Panagra. Braniff purchased the 39-year old South American West Coast airline for $30 million USD from its two owners, W. R. Grace and Company and Pan American World Airways, Inc.
Two days later, on February 3, 1967, Braniff International inaugurated an interchange service with Pan American World Airways, Inc., and National Airlines, Inc., as a result of its February 1, 1967, merger with Pan American Grace Airways, Inc. The service was operated from South America to Panama City/Balboa City, Panama, to Miami, and finally New York City.
The new interchange route that resulted from combining the two carriers featured the first through-flights from San Francisco and Los Angeles to Lima and La Paz and Lima and Santiago, which eliminated the need for a change of plane at Panama City/Balboa City. Braniff crews operated flights south of Panama City/Balboa City, while Pan American crews flew the segment between PTY and Miami and National crewmembers operated the flights between Miami and New York Kennedy Airport. Pan American Grace Airways had been operating the same routing at the time of its merger with Braniff Airways.
