Hi, I'm Jon from CNCROi.com, and today we're showcasing a custom project featuring Corian plaques. These plaques are made from solid Corian, a durable and versatile material, and are 1-inch thick. Since Corian doesn't typically come in 1-inch thickness, the material used is laminated Corian, with two pieces bonded together by the manufacturer.

The blanks for this project were oversized to account for any slight imperfections in my machine setup. The precision of the CNC machine is unmatched, but sometimes, even the smallest deviation can affect the quality of the finished plaque. By using oversized blanks, I ensure the cutting process remains flawless, avoiding potential issues like misaligned text.

A prototype of the plaque was essential in this project to test the engraving, font, and other design elements before starting mass production. Prototyping is crucial to avoid costly mistakes when working on custom projects. For example, during early tests, we discovered that using glued-on letters would cause inconsistencies in alignment due to slight shifts in the adhesive. Additionally, glue can weaken over time, causing the letters to detach. To eliminate these issues, we decided to carve the letters directly into the Corian, resulting in a stronger and more durable plaque.

One of the challenges faced with Corian is its brittleness, which makes it prone to shattering if dropped. To mitigate this risk, I used a roundover bit to smooth the edges, but after a customer request for a bolder look, I turned to sandblasting, which removed machining marks and left a matte finish. Sandblasting also softened the edges, making the plaque safer to handle.

The project also required testing different techniques to ensure the best results. For example, we experimented with both laser engraving and routing, ultimately opting for the router because it offered better control over the depth of the engraving. The consistency and precision provided by the router ensured the plaques met the customer's expectations.

Throughout the prototyping process, we also refined the finishing touches. After carving the letters into the Corian, sandblasting removed machining marks and provided a sleek matte texture that enhanced the overall look. This technique also prevented the letters from being too sharp, making the plaques safer to handle.
