Private Snafu The Goldbrick is a 1943 black-and-white instructional animated short from the WWII-era Private Snafu series produced by Warner Bros. Cartoons for the U.S. War Department, directed by Frank Tashlin and featuring the voice of Mel Blanc. In this short, Private Snafu is fed up with drill and army duties, and a mischievous sprite called Goldie the Goldbrick encourages him to shirk his responsibilities by pretending to be sick or doing only the bare minimum. As Snafu follows this bad advice, he becomes increasingly lazy and ends up in real combat situations unprepared, ultimately leading to disaster and illustrating the harmful consequences of goldbricking (slacking off) in wartime service. The short uses humor and exaggerated scenarios to teach soldiers that avoiding duties can be dangerous and detrimental to the war effort.
