Taylor Swift’s new album “The Life of a Showgirl” has critics in a frenzy as usual. But this time around, some are enthusiastic, while others are rolling their eyes.
According to The New Yorker writer and critic Kelefa Sanneh, this kind of criticism isn’t new. In fact, it’s a return to form. Sanneh recently wrote about how music critics used to be cranky — sometimes downright mean — and the decades-long shift in the way critics react to popular music. Wesley Morris invited Sanneh on this episode of “Cannonball.” Together, they hash out their observations of music criticism past and present to trace how the nasty tradition has turned sweet … and may turn back again.
