BART: 50 Years Later (Fremont to MacArthur)

This is a virtual visit along the line and every station that opened a half century ago.

The people of the San Francisco Bay Area voted to tax themselves to fund the largest single public works project ever undertaken in the United States by the local citizenry, during a multi-decade decline of public transit across the country.

Their expectation was to have the most advanced rapid transit system ever built. The entire idea of a transit system and railroad was re-examined to design a transit system so convenient, safe, comfortable, and affordable that commuters would voluntarily park their private automobiles and ride BART. BART was to be the world-class automated system of the future, today.

The opening of BART in 1972 was a watershed moment in American public transit. Signaling a new age, BART and PATCO showed that public transit could survive and expand to growing suburbs and cities. Systems following BART learned of its mistakes and advances, and many heavy rail systems have used technologies pioneered by BART to design and operate their system.

BART has struggled with a multitude of issues, including recent quality of life issues. Perhaps the next 50 years will bring BART closer to the transit system it was promised to be over 50 years ago.
