NFL rules state that if a kickoff that goes out of bounds, it is a penalty on the kicking team. The offense takes over on the 40-yard line.
Ty Montgomery of the Packers is savvy and well coached because he knew that the ball is out of bounds if it is touched by a player who’s out of bounds, even if the football is still in bounds and in the field of play.
Montgomery realized he had to make a play so he ran out of bounds, then stretched from out of bounds to touch the live ball,
Montgomery would have been flagged had he gone out of bounds then came back in bounds and was the very first player to touch the ball. Ty used classic toe-drag technique but in reverse. He kept his feet out of bounds & reached in to make contact with the ball so no flag and he saved his team from giving up field position on the 40.
One of the slickest Special teams plays ever.
It pays to know the rule book.
