The path of the Moon's shadow across the United States during the total solar eclipse of 2024 are seen on this map. A path of totality for a complete solar eclipse will cover North and Central America on April 8, 2024. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon fully obscures the Sun as it moves in front of Earth. If the weather is favorable, anyone standing in the line of totality may be able to glimpse the Sun's outer atmosphere (the corona), since the sky will darken as if it were day or twilight.
