One really common mistake that parents and childcare workers make when they are helping a child to learn potty skills is to try to prevent accidents. I get it, cleaning up wee and poo is gross, it takes time out of your busy day and it can really derail your plans having to factor in outfit changes and extra laundry. But here's the thing - if you measure potty training success as your child staying dry then you're missing out on an important step which is for them to learn body awareness. If you are prompting them to go, they aren't listening to their body and their bladder isn't having the opportunity to fill to capacity before entering which is best for bladder health and best for learning. Let me tell you why!
Accidents are a vital part of the process of your child learning what it feels like when their bladder is at capacity and when they have held it too long and they are a vital part of the process for you observing their behaviour before an accidents so that you know what it looks like when they need to go. We learn best when we are allowed to make mistakes and also wet clothes provide bio-feedback that something has happened - so using nappies and pull ups to avoid accidents is preventing them from learning.
