As I was approaching my final year of college at the University of Mary Washington, my composition instructor, Dr. Michael Bratt encouraged me to attempt writing a work for a full orchestra. In April 2024, I began working on the first movement of this symphony. Throughout the next year, I continued working at a steady pace, next completing the third movement, then the fourth. The second movement came last, being completed exactly one year later in April 2025.
The fourth movement is the longest and most grand of the movements. I developed its main theme in 6/8, but the movement frequently moves into 4/4 as it progresses. As with the other movements before it, it rapidly moves through keys and pitch centers, always keeping the listener on alert. At one point it quotes an American folk song called the “Dunbar Jig” at section C. To tie all the movements together, it also quotes themes from the other movements. The first movement is quoted in measure 83, the Meridian theme from movement three is quoted in measure 156, and the alternate oboe theme from the third movement is quoted in measure 167. The movement ends with the most bombastic and overwhelming grandeur I have ever written for an orchestra starting with the trumpet fanfare and progressing to the finale of the entire symphony.
