This is a short video I did for fun comparing pickups from both of my favorite winders. In this video, I compare the Brandonwound '59 Clone to the Wizz Premium Clone, the flagship model for both companies.
I was not able to film a video since my camera was on loan to a friend at the time I was putting this together.
The pickups were put in the same guitar, a 2016 Les Paul Standard Historic Reissue. All the same settings were used for both sets of pickups as they were built to a similar spec.
Mic position, amp settings, interface settings, etc... were all kept exactly the same. Even the same strings were used. I also used the same pick when playing each set of pickups as well. In places where one pickup sounds quieter or louder than the other, the decibel readings are still very similar; on average, the pickups are peaking at about -12dB in quiter sections and about -6dB in louder sections, but they're always peaking similarly in similar sections. Any difference in volume you hear is due to dynamic response, frequency response, and the overall fullness in sound of the pickup.
Both of these guys make amazing pickups.
Amps used:
Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue with an SM58 used to mic the speaker. For the crunch section, a Catalinbread RAH was used, but no amp settings were changed; This was to make the comparison more consistent. The RAH was dialed in and set to unity gain.
A Marshall DSL40C was used for the last section. I used an MXL 991 Condenser mic instead of the Shure SM57 I had originally intended to use as it gave a slightly better representation of what I was hearing in the room.
NO post processing was used, except where I put just a little bit of reverb on the Marshall amp to give it a little bit more depth. This was a reverb available in pro tools and sounded very good. Reverb settings are the same for both sets of pickups. I didn't use the reverb on the amp because it just doesn't sound good to my ears.
I would have liked to have been able to use the condenser mic on the Fender, but I felt the Marshall needed it more. The 991 isn't an expensive mic, and it's not the best condenser mic out their either, but it did well in this application. The SM58 did a pretty good job of capturing what I was hearing in the room.
Also, YouTube will compress the audio a bit more on top of any compression imposed by the video processing itself. Also, I chopped the audio up and omitted some sections to make the video flow better and keep the time down. If you are interested in hear the full unedited .wav files, send me a PM and I'll be happy to send them over to you.
