The NHS is facing growing concerns after reports that St George’s flags are creating hostile environments for staff. Leaders say nurses and doctors, especially those from black and Asian backgrounds, feel deliberately intimidated when visiting patients in communities where flags are displayed.
A poll of senior managers found 77% were concerned about discrimination from patients and the public. Health Secretary Wes Streeting described the situation as an “ugly comeback” of 1970s and 1980s-style racism, with frustrations over long waits increasingly taken out on staff.
One leader said the flags made areas feel like “no-go zones” designed to exclude minority staff.
