Hey guys! Welcome back to Dame Untamed. Super stoked that you clicked on THIS video because it’s one I’ve been DYING to share with you for a while now. Buckle up cuz it’s a wild one!

In September 2019 (my last epic adventure before the world turned upside down…) I flew from Tanzania to South Africa in search of one of the ocean’s most fierce, apex predators. The great white shark. A few hours south of Cape Town are some of the best viewing spots for these magnificent predators in all of the world. So, I obviously I jumped right in…

I booked a tour with Shark Lady Adventures, was picked up at my hostel in Cape Town at 4:45AM, and made the 3 hours drive all the way to Gansbaai, where we were provided with a good breakfast and a thorough safety briefing. Then, it was time to hit the water! Just a short boat ride from shore, Shark Alley a 150m channel between Geyser Rock and Dyer Island (Where 60,000 Cape Fur Seals gather to breed) we anchored our boat, the crew got the cage set up, and it was time to begin! (The water was FREEZING @ 14C!)

Right off the bat, we were greeted by the smaller, Bronze Whaler shark, which can grow to lengths of up to 3.3m (11ft). Unfortunately, after a few hours on the water, no white sharks were seen and it was time to head back to shore. I was absolutely devastated. This was a huge bucket list item for me, so… what did I do you ask? I booked again! The second time I chose to book with White Shark Projects as I had read amazing reviews of their service and success rate with the sharks. Thank goodness I did, because it was a SUCCESSFUL trip!

The sharks naturally gravitate to this area due to the abundance of prey, but in order for us to view them, they need to come to the surface. Scenting the water with chum does not feed or lure the sharks to the area, it only intrigues the sharks who are already near the boat and brings them into view.

Although they have been depicted as ferocious killing machines in Hollywood, research and education is changing the opinions of many by revealing the vital role that GWS’s play in maintaining the health of our oceans. Sharks are what’s called a “keystone species”, meaning they are responsible for keeping the intricate ocean ecosystem in balance. As apex predators, they balance food webs and keep both prey populations and vital habitats healthy.

The crew at White Shark Projects gathers data which is important to understanding and supporting their conservation, in addition to providing updated public education and close range engagement for adventurous people like me!
