Sunday of the Triumph of Orthodoxy. Today’s feast commemorates the restoration of the veneration of icons in the Byzantine Empire after the defeat of the Iconoclastic heresy. But its meaning is truly found in the Incarnation of Jesus Christ, who took a human body to sanctify our human nature, and by extension all of creation. The icon is real; physical. So is Jesus and the saints, and this is the reason we can venerate icons. The things of this world, which includes us because we are part of this world, can be made holy through the Incarnation. In today’s Gospel Philip is called to be an apostle with the words “come and see.” This is a call to a personal and experiential knowledge of God.
