Our dear friend Lyra was shot dead while reporting on a riot in Northern Ireland on 18 April 2019. In her memory, and to help share her story, I threw together some outtakes from a video we shot together in 2013-14. Through all the little mistakes and nervous laughter, I hope anyone seeing this gets the sense of Lyra's passion and warmth.
Although Lyra was only in her twenties, and always looked younger than she was, she was a force of nature. Lyra was motivated by a tireless, egoless drive for what she believed in most: the truth. At constant risk of poverty, insult and injury, she created a career for herself as a freelance reporter. Then in 2018 Lyra finally secured a book deal, which she greatly deserved. It felt like the time had come for her voice to be heard.
Last night she was shot dead.
We will miss her but her passion will always be with us.
