A team of chemists from China and the U.S. has developed a unique moldable Rubik’s Cube made from soft, colored hydrogel blocks instead of solid plastic. This 3×3×3 “mushy” cube, published in Advanced Materials on August 7, 2019, can bend, heal itself, and potentially store information in entirely new ways.

The cube’s hydrogel is a self-healing polymer that absorbs water and reforms chemical bonds when broken. According to Professor Jonathan Sessler from the University of Texas at Austin, the team is exploring ways to “encode information in patterns of color and three dimensions,” offering much higher information density than traditional storage. With over 43 quintillion possible configurations, this cube could hold massive amounts of data.

Over time, its soft blocks can rearrange, form new chemical bonds, and lock into place. Scientists hope to use these properties for biomedical applications, such as smart materials that detect and record changes in a patient’s health.

More than a toy, this squishy Rubik’s Cube represents the future of data storage and health monitoring, where materials can adapt, store information, and even heal themselves—bridging the gap between play and technology.
