Jürgen Schmidhuber co-founded his first company, NNAISENSE, in 2014, which is focused on making AI that can interact with the physical world, robots. NNAISENSE has had many industrial customers, including a company involved in 3D printing of metals using lasers. Schmidhuber continues to believe in the promise of recurrent neural networks, particularly those he calls “world models.” His research at KAUST continues to be heavily involved in robotics. Schmidhuber believes that self-replicating robots will be how AIs will ultimately explore the galaxy and the rest of the visible universe.
