Disclaimer: Not a pro, tried to learn as much as I could.
Cocoon's are like Time Attack quests. Each Cocoon grants a Skill Point on clearing it. Each Cocoon will have side missions that affect your clear rank. Rank does not really affect anything, it's more like a self test. One of the side missions was to not glide more than 5 times, I glided once to show that just gliding once didn't automatically fail the side mission.
