When COVID 19, was announced in the country in March 2020, the government ordered charities to shut down rescue shelters and orphanages leaving many children especially girls vulnerable.
In Dol Dol, Laikipia county, One More Day Safe house acts as a safe haven for girls fleeing early marriage and female genital mutilation, but when the institution was closed down temporarily, the girls were forced to go back home.
According to activists, the community took advantage of the call to stay-at-home to perpetrate the deeply entrenched traditions.
Some of the girls were subjected to the cut while others were married off.
