In May, I set out to fly to as many places in Europe as possible, while also flying on as many different airlines and aircraft types as possible. Over a 14 day period I flew on 19 airlines, 21 aircraft types, 30 total flights, all while covering over 31,000 miles. In the end I visited 14 different countries throughout the journey. Flight 11 Fun Fact – I get this question a lot, so I figured I'd make it this flight's fun fact. You may notice that this aircraft is listed as a 737-7BD in the title. And you may have noticed in other videos that 737-700's are listed as 737-7H4's or 737-7CT's, etc. Why are they listed that way, and not just as a 737-700? Well, those are their specific aircraft designation. For all Boeing aircraft manufactured before the 737 Max and 787, the last two digits of their aircraft designation are their "Boeing Customer Code." Before they were dropped, codes were assigned to aircraft based on whoever the aircraft was originally ordered by and delivered to. Every airline that ordered aircraft from Boeing were issued a customer code, and that code was then added to their aircraft. Southwest Airlines' Boeing customer code was H4. So most flights you see on Southwest Airlines are listed as such... Boeing 737-7H4 or 737-8H4. However, airlines often buy used planes, and the customer code assigned when the aircraft was ordered and delivered never changes. So, when you see a Southwest Airlines flight like this one, where the code on the end of the designation is not H4, you can immediately determine the aircraft wasn't delivered new to Southwest. In this case, BD is the code for AirTran Airways. This 737-700 was originally ordered and delivered to AirTran, and it was acquired by Southwest when Southwest bought AirTran. As mentioned above, the code system was dropped when the 787 and 737 Max programs were created, but all older Boeing aircraft still maintain this coding system. In the end, you can think of it like the old saying about thumbs. You know, all thumbs are fingers, but not all fingers are thumbs. Well, all 737-7BD's are 737-700's, but not all 737-700's are 737-7BD's. There's a great wikipedia page that lists all Boeing customer codes if you'd like to dive further into this.
