A criminally underrated gem by the defunct Atari Games/Tengen, Xybots is one of the first TPS (3rd person shooters).
The designers started out trying to make it a 3D Gauntlet. Atari Games' management said "do not give us another Gauntlet" so the theme was changed to taking back a space station from enemy robots. While you can explore the labyrinthine levels freely (that's something I'd like to see a modern FPS/TPS try for a change!) you need to be quick about it... your energy is ticking down. Clearing a level of robots gets you another 5.000 points at the exit. Between levels you can buy some powerups with the coins you've grabbed. Hitting a 25.000 point interval gives you 3 extra coins. Some items will last for 1 level like the 2nd shot, mappers, or slow energy loss. Others are higher priced but will be permanent such as faster move speed, more shot power, better shield, etc.
When certain milestone levels are reached, you'll fight a boss simply known as a Master Xybot. Take out all 6 gun barrels to beat him, & you'll get a massive bonus (250,000 for the first one, even more for later ones).
The Atari Lynx port isn't bad, but it is missing some enemy types. Tengen made a NES version, which exists only as a prototype. They even had one planned for the Sega Genesis. Too bad that was cancelled because I'm sure it would've been great. Luckily, when Williams (also known as WMS) acquired Atari Games, they opened the door for arcade-perfect PS2, Xbox, PS3, Xbox 360, & PSP versions. Warner Brothers released the Midway Arcade Origins pack for PS3 & Xbox 360 with this & many other games. The 360 version is also playable on Xbox One BTW. Unfortunately, in the Origins version there is a grave caveat: You cannot use the zap power! The developers forgot to map a button for it... seriously, what the hell were they thinking? Also, there is some pretty bad input lag. I think they need to do a new Midway collection for PS4/X1 & hire M2 to develop that if it's possible.
The PSP's Midway Arcade Treasures Extended Play can be bought digitally on PSN.
