UNESCO and KAR Group have launched a landmark initiative to revitalize the historic Erbil Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Kurdistan Region’s capital city. The four-year project, supported by a $10 million contribution from KAR, aims to preserve key architectural elements, improve visitor accessibility, and stimulate both cultural and economic activity within the site.
The partnership agreement was formalized during a signing ceremony in Paris, attended by UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay, KAR CEO Baz Raof Kareem, and senior representatives from the Iraqi and Kurdish governments.
Building on KAR’s earlier $2.5 million restoration efforts, the new phase will combine architectural conservation with infrastructure upgrades and local skills training. The goal is to ensure the Citadel’s long-term sustainability as a dynamic cultural, social, and tourism hub for the region.
