On July 20th, 2020, The Indian Ocean Working Group held the first session of its webinar series. The webinar, “Indian Ocean Humanities: Current State, Future Directions,” focused on the reflections of scholars of the Indian Ocean diaspora. They discussed the present state of humanities discourses on the Indian Ocean World as well as possible directions for further research and creative work inspired by its rich cross-cultural exchanges. The panelists shared their thoughts on the current methodological, disciplinary, and theoretical state of Indian Ocean humanities studies, and what the global future of Indian Ocean humanities looks like from their particular professional windows. In addition, the webinar included a broad discussion of the initiatives, programs, and seminars in which the panelists had participated over the years.
Moderated by Professor Firat Oruc, Assistant Professor of World Literature at Georgetown University in Qatar, the participation of the following panelists generated an engaging discussion: -

● Professor Ananya Jahanara Kabir, Professor of English Literature at King’s College London
● Professor Jeremy Prestholdt, Associate Professor of History at University of California, San Diego
● Professor Vilashini Cooppan Associate Professor of Literature at University of California, Santa Cruz
