STORYLINE:
Thousands of people displaced from Beirut's southern suburbs filled the streets and public squares of the Lebanese capital.

Displaced Muslims have struggled to observe Ramadan as they lack basic necessities, including shelter and food.

Many gathered around Mohammad al-Amin Mosque on Friday in the open air, seeking whatever temporary shelter they can find, as Israeli strikes intensified.

Jihan Shehadeh, a displaced woman from Beirut's southern suburbs, is one of the people sheltering in the mosque during the day, and sleeping in the family car at night.

She said the mosque has provided them with a meal for iftar, the sunset meal that ends the daily fast and the pre-dawn meal suhoor.

Israel launched a series of strikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut Thursday after ordering all residents of the densely populated area to evacuate.

According to the Lebanese government, more than 95,000 people are displaced from Beirut's suburbs as well as southern and eastern Lebanon.

Roads in the Lebanese capital were choked with evacuating traffic as smoke rose over the city’s southern districts. Two hospitals evacuated patients and staff.

Many people spent the cold night in public squares, by the coast or in their cars as schools and other shelters are now housing nearly 100,000 people.

Lebanon's Health Ministry said at least 217 people have been killed by Israeli strikes since Monday and 798 wounded.
