"King of the abyss, make haste," the witch Ulrica sings, summoning the devil into her house. Villagers have gathered to see her perform magic — and she calls on the devil to place the "torch of the future" into her hands, so she can predict their fortunes.
But who should step into her midst but King Gustavo himself, disguised in rags, ready to investigate all the hullabaloo about witchcraft in his kingdom. If he is skeptical about Ulrica's powers, her bone-chilling aria "Re dell'abisso, affrettati" might change his mind.
