Definition: A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun or pronoun and another word in the sentence. In short, it tells where, when, how, or in what way something happens.

Example: The book is on the table.
→ “on” shows the relationship between book and table (it tells where the book is).

Common Prepositions of Place Explained in This Video: in, on, under, behind, between, among, near, above, below, etc.

in – inside something
➡ She is in the room.
➡ The toys are in the box.
➡ She lives in Mumbai.
➡ There’s milk in the fridge.

on – touching the surface
➡ The pen is on the desk.
➡ The book is on the table.

under – below something
➡ The cat is under the bed.
➡ The shoes are under the table.

behind – at the back of something
➡ The boy is behind the door.
➡ The car is parked behind the building.

between – in the middle of two things
➡ The school is between the park and the bank.
➡ He sat between Naina and Sunaina.

among – in the middle of many things
➡ He was among his friends.
➡ She was happy among her classmates.

near – close to another thing but not touching it
➡ There’s a park near my house.
➡ Sit near the window for fresh air.

above – higher than another thing
➡ The picture is above the bed.
➡ The fan is above the dining table.

below – lower than another thing
➡ The temperature is below zero.
➡ The valley lies below the hills.
