🎙️ In this episode of the EAVI Conversations Podcast, we meet Adeline Hulin, Head of the Media and Information Literacy Unit at UNESCO, and Julia Haas, international law expert and advisor to the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, in conversation with journalist and educator Alexandre Le Voci Sayad, member of the EAVI Advisory Board.
We explore how generative artificial intelligence is impacting media freedom and journalism, transforming how information is produced, disseminated, accessed, and monetised.
Together, they explain how we are living in a “perfect storm”, facing interconnected crises of trust, access, visibility and viability of information. They reflect on how the business model of media has been severely affected by the shift in advertising revenues to tech platforms, whose power increasingly shapes the entire information ecosystem.
They also shed light on the importance of explainability in AI and platforms, and why user empowerment must be embedded in digital platform governance, ensuring that technologies are designed to give users greater understanding and agency.
Adeline and Julia further reflect on the critical role of media and information literacy, and why a holistic, multi-stakeholder approach is essential to safeguarding media freedom and empowering citizens in the digital age.
🎧 Tune in for an inspiring conversation on the impact of the concentration of power in big tech and AI companies, the need for technology transparency to enable user empowerment, and the importance of media literacy skills for media freedom and information integrity.
