Dahi Vada or Dahi Bhalla is a very delicious and spicy chaat prepared with moong dal vadas ( lentil dumplings ) dipped in yogurt and topped with sweet and sour chutney & a mix of Indian spices. These fat free dahi vadas are not deep fried, instead are made in Appam / Paniyaram Pan. You can serve these dahi vada / dahi bhalla as a side dish with lunch and dinner or you can have it as an appetizer.

Dahi Vada is a very tasty side
dish prepared with moong dal
Today I'm going to make fat free version without deep frying.
Today I'll be making vadas in Paniyaram pan
Lets see the ingredients required
for making moong dal dahi vada
For this we'll need
1. Washed Moong Dal - 1/2 cup
2. Washed Urad Dal - 2 tbsp
3. Baking Soda - 1 pinch
4. Red chilly Powder - 1 tsp
5. Asafoetida - 1 pinch
6. Sweet and Sour Chutney - 1 cup
7. Salt - 2 tsp , adjust to taste
8. Chaat Masala - 1 tsp
9. Oil - 2 tbsp
10. Fresh Whipped Yogurt - 2 cups
Lets start making moong dal vada
Wash and soak both dals
in water for 6 hours
Blend these dals in a blender
Add extra water only if needed.
Blend it into a thick and coarse
paste without adding water
Whip this paste for about 5 minutes
Add asafoetida
Paste color is getting lighter
Add 1/2 tsp salt and baking
soda to the paste and mix
Take water in a large bowl and
add about 1/2 tsp of salt
Take a paniyaram pan and add small
amount of oil into its cavities
Now turn on the gas and let it heat
Pan is heated, lower the heat and pour about
1 1/2 tsp of batter into the cavities
Cover the pan with a lid, cook
it on medium heat for 2 minutes
Its been 2 minutes, now flip
the vadas to other side
Cover and let it cook from other side too
They are done, now take
them out into a plate
Put these vadas into water
Similarly make all the vadas
Soak the vadas in water for about 10 minutes
You can also refrigerate these vadas and soak them
in water whenever you want to prepare dahi vada
Its been 10 minutes, all the vadas
are ready, now lets serve them
Squeeze extra water out of
the vadas with you palms
Put vadas in yogurt
Vadas are very soft
Let them soak in yogurt for 1 minute
We have used very less oil while making these vadas,
moreover extra oil is has been removed while soaking in water
Take the vadas out into a plate
Pour some yogurt over these vadas
Add chutney
Sprinkle some chaat masala
Sprinkle salt and red chilly powder
Dahi Vada is ready
Moong Dal dahi vada is ready.
They are very tasty.
You can have them as snack or as a
aside dish with your lunch and dinner
You can serve them as
chaat in your kitty party
