STORYLINE:
About 40 protesters from the 'Occupy 'movement gathered in front of the town hall in Davos, Switzerland, on Saturday to protest on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF), the annual meeting of political and business power players.
Some protesters held placards with slogans such as "If voting would change anything, it would be illegal" and "Don't let them decide for you, Occupy WEF."
They then marched toward the forum, prompting about a
dozen police officers to hastily erect a mobile barrier as
Saturday shoppers looked on.
The event was peaceful.
The protesters, who called themselves 'Occupy WEF' have also built a small igloo village outside the security perimeter, where they have so far been tolerated by police.
The group are following in the footsteps of the Occupy Wall Street movement that spread to cities around the world.
Meanwhile, during talks on Saturday, the U.N. trade chief urged global leaders to focus much more on reducing growing inequalities around the world than constantly looking to appease financial markets, which largely benefits the rich.
Supachai Panitchpakdi pointed to protests around the world, from countries that launched the Arab Spring to the Occupy Wall Street movement in the U.S., that draw attention to the growing disparity between frustrated unemployed young people who have no voice and the financiers who reap huge salaries from dealings that don't promote real economic growth.
He expressed frustration that the forum's annual meeting has been dominated by the financial crisis in Europe over the euro, which he said European politicians must resolve.
