At the Linwood Dunn Theatre in Hollywood last night, ASCAP held a private screening of the Fox Searchlight film Once followed by a Q & A with the film's stars, Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova.
The anti-musical musical about two struggling musicians in Dublin is loosely based on the experiences of The Frames' frontman, Glen Hansard. Initially, director (and former Frames' band mate), John Carney, asked Hansard to compose the film's music. But when Carney lost his lead star and, subsequently, the $2 million invested in the film, Carney convinced Glen Hansard to take the role.
In a miraculous 17 days of shooting and with approximately $120,000 (according to Hansard ) they were able to make the film The Chicago Tribune said "may be the best music film of our generation".
Hansard and Irglova are on tour opening for Bob Dylan and playing music off the film's soundtrack. Here's a clip of them performing 'Falling Slowly' live, in front of an intimate audience of Hollywood songwriters and music publishers...
