A little while back we covered the discontinued 5170P platinum chronograph from Patek Philippe not without some bittersweet nostalgia. Patek has been crafting chronographs for generations and when it comes to luxury hand-wound versions, Patek answers the call.

Today we’re taking a look at the most recent watch from the 5070 lineage, the 5172G white gold manual-winding chronograph. At a glance the timepiece is exquisite with its blue dial and the case’s elegant curves, lines, and edges. Looking under the hood we’ll find the same CH 29‑535 PS movement from the last iteration which can also be viewed through the open casebook in all its glory.

Where we see Patek deviate from the predecessor is in the overall feel of the watch. It’s managed to stay elegant while still coming across as more relaxed with just a splash more of a vintage sport look. The indices are now Arabic numerals and are luminous in conjunction with the syringe style hands reminding us a bit of the 5524G. The strap is also now calfskin leather rather than crocodile again adding to the more laid back sport aesthetic. Still, Patek gives us features like the three-tier lugs and the round guilloched pushers to reinforce the brand's inherent elegance.

Overall, this piece should be well received by collectors and Patek fans alike not only for its modified aesthetic but also because the retail price is a tad lower than the predecessor. Better grab one while you can.
