The prominent structure in the background is the Cape Byron Lighthouse, located on mainland Australia's most easterly point in Byron Bay, New South Wales.
History and Features
Significance: It is recognized as Australia's most powerful lighthouse, with a light intensity of 2.2 million candelas that can be seen from 27 nautical miles (approximately 50 km) offshore.
Construction: Built between 1899 and 1901, the 23-meter-tall tower was constructed using precast concrete blocks, an innovative technique for its time that eliminated the need for complex scaffolding.
Design: It was designed by architect Charles Harding in a Victorian Georgian style and officially opened on December 1, 1901, by NSW Premier John See.
Automation: The lighthouse was manned by resident keepers until 1989, when it was fully automated.
Visiting the Lighthouse
The lighthouse is a major tourist destination, attracting over 500,000 visitors annually.
Activities: Visitors can explore the Maritime Museum located in the former head keeper's office at the base of the tower. Guided tours to the top of the tower are often available for a gold coin donation.
Vantage Point: It is a renowned spot for watching the sunrise and spotting marine wildlife, including dolphins, turtles, and humpback whales during their annual migration from June to November.
Access: The site can be reached via the 3.7km Cape Byron walking track, which offers scenic clifftop views.
