The deadliest sniper in Canadian history wasn't just a killer - he was a hero who saved countless lives. Meet Francis Pegahmagabow, "The Ghost."
Francis Pegahmagabow, an Ojibwe man from Wasauksing First Nation, volunteered for WWI when Indigenous people couldn't even vote in Canada. He became the most effective sniper in Canadian military history with 378 confirmed kills. But that's not what made him extraordinary.
While others saw him as a deadly Ghost, Francis repeatedly risked his life crawling into No Man's Land to rescue wounded soldiers. He fought at the Somme, Vimy Ridge, and Passchendaele - surviving four years when most lasted weeks. He earned the Military Medal three times, one of the most decorated Indigenous soldiers in Canadian history.
When he returned home, Canada still didn't recognize him as a citizen. So he fought a different war - becoming Chief of his nation and spending decades fighting for Indigenous rights. He lived to 86, refusing to let war or injustice define him.
