Crossing "The Mighty Mac"
This is a hand-held, slighty bouncy and choppy 'cheap camera' video of our recent drive across the Mackinac Bridge into the UP (Michigan's Upper Peninsula) on a rather windy day.
On the south side is Mackinaw City, leading to St. Ignace near the north landing. First put into service on November 1st, 1957
The toll was $4.00 (US) to cross this impressive structure in a standard vehicle ($2.00 per axle). The fee increases for motor homes, Semi-Trucks, etc.
The "Big Mac" is the longest suspension bridge with only two towers between its anchorages in the Western Hemisphere. The extended ramps prior to the anchorages give it a total shoreline-to-shoreline length of 5 miles (8 km).
The main span length is stated to be 3,800 feet (1,158 m), giving it the title of; "Third-longest suspension span in the United States and fifteenth longest in the world"
