Game Over! Pennsylvania gov just officially made a huge SEPTA announcement...
Game over, or at least that’s how it feels for Philadelphia commuters right now. SEPTA, the lifeline moving hundreds of thousands across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware, is slashing 20% of its bus, subway, and regional rail service while hiking fares by 21.5% starting in September. All of this comes from a state funding shortfall that’s forcing tough choices, sparking anger, and raising urgent questions about the future of transit in the region. In today’s episode of Great Train Speed, we’ll dive into the details, the consequences, and what Pennsylvania is trying to do to keep the system alive.

The first phase of SEPTA’s so-called “doomsday” cuts begins on August 24, just one day before Philadelphia’s public schools reopen. This initial wave will eliminate 32 bus routes and shorten 16 others, while also reducing service on Route 88, the Metro, and Regional Rail.
Beyond the buses, the reductions extend to the core of Philadelphia’s transit network.
Take a quick look at the chart, and we can immediately notice that
Starting August 24, Market-Frankford Line trains will arrive every 8 minutes instead of 6, while trolley headways could stretch to 15 minutes. By September 2, Regional Rail will see the sharpest pullback: most lines dropping to one train every two hours, with even the Airport Line restricted to hourly service alongside a steep 21.5% fare increase on September 1.

And the consequences ripple far beyond train platforms and bus stops.
Experts estimate up to 275,000 additional cars could pour onto Philadelphia’s already congested streets, fueling gridlock, worsening air pollution, and straining families who already feel squeezed by rising costs. For the city’s 198,000 students and 52,000 of whom rely on SEPTA each day, the timing emphasizes the severity of the moment. The timing could not be worse: students returning to school that Monday will be the first to feel the squeeze, followed days later by tens of thousands of Eagles fans heading to the Thursday night home opener against Dallas
Looking further ahead, by January 1, 2026, SEPTA plans an even more dramatic step, implementing a 9 p.m. curfew across all trains and discontinuing five Regional Rail routes along with the Broad-Ridge Spur.
The crisis stems from a staggering budget deficit and political gridlock, with Governor Josh Shapiro urging leaders to put aside partisanship and rise to the moment.
