In this video, jeweler Dan Moran of Concierge Diamonds Inc in Los Angeles explains white gold.
White gold does not exist in nature. To make a white gold ring we plate or cover it with a very thin layer of metal called rhodium. Rhodium is a very white, very hard, very brittle metal. That's actually almost as expensive as gold, but we use so little of it that it doesn't matter. We cover that white gold ring in a very thin layer of rhodium to give it that bright white appearance.
