In this photoswitch circuit, the first transistor functions as a switch. The second transistor functions as an amplifier.
When the LDR (Light Dependent Resistor) is closed or placed in a dark place, the voltage across it rises above 0.6 volts. This voltage is then used at the base/emitter junction to conduct the transistor.
When this circuit is placed in a dark environment, or the LDR is closed, the lamp will turn on. The voltage required to turn on the lamp is 6 volts. The output voltage between the positive terminal and the collector leg of the transistor is approximately 8 volts.
A small voltage falls across the collector/emitter of the transistor. Therefore, once assembly is complete, the LDR should be placed outside the construction.
This way, the lamp in the unit will automatically turn on and off (depending on the light received by the LDR). When it's bright, the lamp will turn off. Conversely, when it's dark, the lamp will turn on.
