Dirty Weekend on The Ridgeway - A Bikepacking & Bivouacking Paradise

Описание: The Ridgeway has been here for thousands of years and is often referred to as Britain’s oldest road. Now in the age of the motor vehicle, the word ‘road’ might seem odd to us, but to neolithic people and to the Romans, it offered a virtual highway through the then thickly forested countryside either side. There is plenty of evidence of ancient civilisations up on the ridge ranging from castles, hill forts and burial mounds. Today The Ridgeway offers access to the busy working farms and importantly, one of the UK’s most iconic walking trails.

In excess of 70 kilometres, the southern most half is open to mountain bikers, gravel bikers and bike packers. With a mix of single track, gravel, smooth chalk, short grass and stone the route is not particularly technical, but with lots of undulations, can seem hard work at times. It is almost paradise. At about 260 meters above sea level prepare for some fantastic views of the country below.

I used a Cicerone walking guide and Ride With GPS to plan my weekend and to find water points, but in reality, you could suck it and see and follow your nose as it is well signposted. Enjoy.

Alpkit Frame Pack: Tool kit, small pot, mug, coffee filter, spork, small stove and gas canister. Ground coffee.

Ortlieb Seat Pack: Outdoor Gear Helium bivvy bag and all food for the weekend (Dehydrated Expedition meals

Osprey Raptor 14 rucksack: Clothes and 2.5 liters of water. Sawn off toothbrush.
