This clip splices together several excellent examples of how Dwayne Roloson communicates with his teammates during an NHL game. (Edmonton vs. Anaheim, 28 Nov. 2006) Key points of note:
1) short, simple, conventional directions to guide play around his net;
2) vocal intensity;
3) shrewd management of contact with opposing players; and
4) clear judgement.
He could probably have done without one or two of those "Leave him!" yells at the end, but the point is clear, and his judgement sound: an opposing player bumped him, he made sure the ref saw the result of the contact, and he clearly communicated the correct judgement to his defence.
You don't want to be caught trying to say, "There is an opposing player rapidly approaching," when "MAN ON!" will do just fine.
