What is Polycystic Kidney Disease? | Signs & Symptoms ( Explained )
As we all know, the kidneys filter out extra waste material and fluid from the body, and PKD severely impairs this ability. A polycystic kidney is characterized by numerous cyst formations and frequently enlarges as the cysts grow in size over time. A kidney cyst is a swollen, fluid-filled sac that occurs on one or both kidneys.
The presence of fluid in these cysts is the most serious consequence. Cysts in PKD can cause high blood pressure, vascular problems in the brain and heart, and liver cysts. Polycystic kidney disease affects 4 to 7 million people, with 7 to 14 percent requiring renal replacement treatment.
These fluid-filled cysts disfigure the kidneys over time, which increases the number of issues.
This kidney enlargement is ongoing and is strongly linked to worsening renal functioning. A higher rate of kidney enlargement is frequently associated with a quicker loss of renal functioning, which is problematic in and of itself.
